What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis Treatment & Care in Singapore

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine, instead of growing straight up, has grown laterally, or sideways, into a “C” or “S”-shaped curve. This can cause pain and in severe cases, diminishing lung capacity. The spine ends up putting pressure on the heart, and restricts one’s physiological capability for physical activities. Studies have shown people who are aligned, or have their scoliosis treated professionally, can live up to 14 years longer compared to someone whose spine is not aligned and has never sought professional help to address the ever-worsening problem.

We offer world class Scoliosis treatment and care at our chiropractic clinic, located in the heart of Singapore. Call us for more information.

THREE TYPES OF SCOLIOSIS

Infantile Idiopathic Scoliosis

This occurs between birth and three years of age. Many infants with infantile idiopathic scoliosis are healthy and normal, and merely have a small curvature of the spine.

Juvenile Idiopathic Scoliosis

This occurs between the ages of 3 through 10 with an average age of 7. This type can lead to severe lateral curvature and upwards of 30% will eventually have corrective surgery.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

This occurs from the age of 10 until one’s skeletal structure is fully developed. The most common type of Idiopathic Scoliosis is Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

The cause of scoliosis is largely unknown, as it can develop in children from seemingly out of nowhere. However, many medical studies have indicated that genetics have a large part to play in one developing scoliosis.

Most importantly, a spinal alignment may increase your quality of life dramatically. Your spine continues to grow and develop well into your early 20s. Scoliosis often worsens if left uncorrected, as the bones get progressively more and more out of shape. It is possible for your spine to eventually get totally out of alignment. Unfortunately, the most common treatment approach has been to wait and see how bad it gets, then resorting to unsightly braces, or eventually surgery if it progresses too far.

Scoliosis, as a skeletal disorder, first takes hold in our bodies when our skeleton is still developing. This takes place in our youth. Curvatures in the spine can be observed from as young as infancy, which is technically defined as the time we are born to until we turn 3 years old. From ages 3 to 10 years old, scoliosis could begin and continue to keep worsening. Juveniles who display these symptoms need the proper chiropractic care to prevent it from worsening and to relieve pain immediately.
